Herter Park Amphitheater
One of our favorite pro-bono projects is the restoration of the Herter Park Amphitheater, located in the Christian A. Herter Park, along the Charles River in Allston, MA. Built in 1959 as part of the original Boston Metropolitan Arts Center and Institute of Contemporary Art, the Amphitheater has 350 seats, plus an additional 200 lawn seats.
The Friends of Herter Park started as a grass-roots effort in the fall of 2015. A group of dedicated individuals began volunteering their time to revitalize the Herter Park Amphitheater, once a wonderful community asset, but unused for nearly seven years. In spring 2017, FoHP became a full 501(c)3 non-profit, with Michelle Ciccolo as President of the FoHP Board of Directors. From theater to dance, from movies to music, from puppet shows to comedy, we strive to bring as much free/low-cost programming back to the community as possible. |
To date, we have held many clean-up days clearing brush, weeding, raking leaves, replacing benches, painting and repairing the stage. We won a successful grant from the Harvard-Allston Public Realm Flex Fund to help restore electricity to the site, a project we hope to complete in spring 2018, if the remaining necessary funds are raised. We have held many successful events this season (albeit with generators), but look forward to a spectacular 2018 season!
